Understanding Tooth Staining

150 150 Atlanta Smiles and Wellness

The best way to maintain a healthy smile is proper dental care, both at home and at the dentist. A good bit of tooth staining can be avoided by proper brushing and flossing. However, even those with quite healthy teeth will likely notice some staining or discoloration on their teeth at some point. This is because there are many different factors that can affect the color of your teeth.

Teeth Staining Factors

It comes as no surprise that what we eat and drink can cause our teeth to become discolored. This is because our teeth are frequently coming into contact with food and beverages that cause stains on the teeth. Wine, coffee, tea, soda are all some of the biggest offenders due to their deep color. The pigment of the liquid penetrates the enamel and sets in as a stain.

If you experience trauma to your teeth, cracks are likely to form. These cracks lead to discoloration over time causing the affected teeth to look darker than surrounding teeth. This is because the cracks accumulate more stain causing debris than the surrounding healthier teeth. In-office teeth whitening is your best option for removing those tough stains.

Aging

As we age, our teeth become darker. This is due to long term build up of debris in the tiny crevices on the surface of the teeth. Genetics can also play a role in how quickly your teeth begin to yellow. As time goes by, the stains become stubborn and harder to remove. Don’t wait until more stains accumulate to address the discoloration. The sooner you whiten your teeth, the better results you will have.

If your teeth have become stained or you would like a more sparkly smile, teeth whitening may be for you. Schedule a consultation with us today to get started on your path to a brighter, whiter smile!

Benefits Of In-Office Teeth Whitening

When we notice our smile isn’t as bright as it once was, it can be a little disheartening. After all, a dazzling white smile makes us look happy and healthy! There are a few over the counter options for getting our teeth a few shades whiter. However, there are several benefits of professional teeth whitening.

Quicker Teeth Whitening Results:

Whitening your teeth at home takes days or weeks depending on the method you use. Whitening toothpastes and mouth washes must be used exactly as directed and can take weeks to show results. Teeth whitening strips have to be applied twice a day for upwards of 30 minutes. Professional teeth whitening is often completed in a single office visit. For those with severe tooth discoloration, it may be advised to have additional sessions to achieve maximum results.

More Convenient:

With everything we have going on our daily lives, it can be hard to squeeze in one more thing. Over the counter teeth whitening treatments often add another step to our personal care routine. Teeth whitening strips are typically applied twice a day for up to 30 minutes. That is an hour of your day that you have to set aside for treatment. With in-office teeth whitening, the whitening process takes about an hour. You can be finished with your appointment and on your way in a couple of hours.

Whiter Teeth:

To achieve your whitest shade of white, you need to have your teeth whitened professionally. While at home teeth whitening treatments can get your teeth whiter, they are unlikely to yield drastic results. The whitening gel used at the dentist’s office is more concentrated than what you can purchase over the counter. If you have severe staining or teeth that are more stained than others due to trauma, in-office teeth whitening is your best option for a brighter smile.

Vital And Non-Vital Teeth Whitening

Considering Teeth Whitening In Atlanta?

Non-vital teeth whitening patients at Atlanta Smiles & Wellness If your smile isn’t as bright as it once was, you have probably considered teeth whitening. Most everyone has experienced some tooth discoloration in their life, ranging from slight yellowing to dark brown. Often, discoloration is caused by things that you eat and drink. However, it can also be due to the treatment of the root of your tooth. There are two main types of Atlanta teeth whitening. They are called Non-Vital whitening and Vital whitening.

Non-Vital Teeth Whitening

Non-Vital whitening refers to the color correction of a tooth that has had a root canal. The term “non-vital” refers to the fact that the tooth is essentially dead. After receiving the root canal, the pulp inside of the tooth can start to darken. In order to whiten that tooth, the dentist must insert the whitening agent directly inside of the tooth. This is commonly done by drilling into the tooth and using the drilled hole to inject that bleaching agent. Most patients see a difference in a few days, though for others it may take a little longer. Once the tooth is the desired shade of white, the dentist then removes the whitening agent from the inside of the tooth. The tooth is sealed off using dental composite material.

Vital Teeth Whitening

Vital whitening is a more common procedure for teeth whitening. It refers to the color correction of teeth with stained enamel. Gel whitening solutions are the most common way to whiten the enamel of the teeth. Though they make gel kits to use at home, in-office whitening can yield much more dramatic results. For in-office procedures, the gums will be treated with a protective agent. Once the gums are covered, the bleaching agent is applied to the teeth. Depending on the type of active ingredient, light is used to activate the gel through heat or illumination. The length of time your teeth will set under the light depends on the gel and how discolored the teeth are. This timeframe is usually between 30 and 90 minutes.

What Happens Next?

Once your session is complete, the dentist will talk to you about next steps. If your teeth are moderately discolored, you may need 1 or 2 additional treatments. If they are badly discolored, you may be given a whitening kit to use at home in addition to the in-office treatments.
