Gum Disease Treatment

Protect Your Oral Health

REAL People. REAL Smiles.

Invest in gum disease treatment from Atlanta Smiles to protect your gums and bone structure. Gum disease threatens your overall health. Gum disease links to many severe and adverse health issues. Early intervention offers the best solution to resolve gum disease before it progresses.

Yet, many people do not know they have gum disease until it develops into more severe dental problems like tooth loss or decay. Only then do they seek the help of a dental professional.

Whether you are in the early stages of periodontal disease or a more advanced stage, the dental experts at Atlanta Smiles can help. We provide world-class care with gum disease treatment to restore your overall health.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, or periodontitis, damages the soft tissue and bones supporting the teeth. Gum disease is an infection caused when bacteria build up in the mouth and harden into plaque.

Over time, the alveolar bone around the teeth disintegrates, causing pain, sensitivity, tooth loss, and other unwanted symptoms. Gum disease ranges from mild to severe depending on the stage of development. Treatment options vary based on the type and stage of the gum disease.

What Are the Types of Gum Disease Treatments?

Preventative dental care helps catch gum disease early. Plus, dental cleanings remove plaque on the gum line to prevent or delay the development of gum disease—schedule regular dental cleaning to maintain good oral health and address dental issues. Once gum disease develops, dental cleaning cannot repair the problem.

We work with patients with gum disease to develop the right treatment plan based on your specific case. We customize care to provide the best options to restore your health.

Surgical Treatments

When non-surgical options do not restore the tissue around the teeth, we typically recommend surgical treatment.

Pocket Reduction Surgery – This surgery aims to decrease the space between the gums and teeth to limit the area where infection-causing bacteria can grow. The doctor lifts the gums to remove the tartar and smooth damaged bone. Then, the doctor places the gums closely around the tooth.

Bone Grafts – If the gum disease has progressed to the point of bone loss, grafting creates a platform for bone tissue to regrow. The doctor uses the patient’s bone, synthetic bone, or donated bone to replace the bone destroyed by gum disease. This new surface encourages tissue growth to restore stability and healthy gums.

Soft Tissue Grafts – As with bone grafting, this procedure encourages tissue growth. Grafted tissue from the patient’s mouth fills in the receded areas. This adds tissue to protect the bone while also stimulating new growth.

Non-Surgical Treatment

Scaling and root planing are deep-cleaning techniques that offer a non-surgical treatment option for gum disease. The procedures require a local anesthetic. The combination removes bacteria and creates a clean surface for the gums to reattach to the teeth.

Scaling – The dental team scrapes away plaque and tartar above and below the gum line.

Planing – The dental team smooths rough spots on the teeth’ roots.

What Are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?

Gum disease often doesn’t show obvious symptoms until it becomes more advanced. Regular dental cleanings offer the most effective option to prevent and address gum disease early. If you experience any of the signs of gum disease, schedule a dental visit.

  • Swollen gums
  • Receded gum line
  • Bleeding of the gums
  • Reoccurring or ongoing bad breath
  • Mouth sores
  • Loose teeth

Swollen gums are typically the first signs of a problem. Also, if the gums begin to look smaller, this signals gum shrinkage, which means the gums are no longer healthy. Healthy gums hold the teeth in place. Eventually, gum disease leads to tooth loss if left untreated.

How to Diagnose Gum Disease

First, the dentist looks for the signs of gum disease by noticing the symptoms. Then, once we suspect gum disease, we discuss the patient’s symptoms and lifestyle factors that may influence the development of gum disease.

In addition, the dental examination checks for plaque and tartar buildup. Plus, we investigate to look for easy bleeding of the gums.

One of the most accurate ways to track gum disease is by measuring the depth of the pocket between your gums and teeth. We place a dental probe beside your tooth and beneath your gum line to determine the depth. The pocket typically measures around 1 and 3 millimeters in a healthy mouth. If the pocket measures deeper, it indicates a problem.

Once we determine the presence of gum disease, we may use dental x-rays to check for bone loss. The goal is to track the progression of gum disease and recommend the best treatment option to resolve the issue.

Benefits of Gum Disease Treatment

Risks of Untreated Gum Disease

Early intervention is the best way to address gum disease. However, once progressed, patients still have options for healing and improved health.

  • Stop or slow the progression of gum disease
  • Avoid other health risks related to gum disease
  • Reduce pain or discomfort
  • Maintain a beautiful smile
  • Improve the smell of the breath
  • Remove plaque and resolve the infection
  • Improve oral health and overall health

Gum disease impacts more than just the teeth and mouth. If left untreated, gum disease creates discomfort and eventually tooth loss. More severe conditions link to gum disease because the bacteria and infection of the gums impact the entire body.

  • Heart Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Pneumonia
  • Stroke
  • Alzheimer’s Or Other Cognitive Disease
  • Premature Birth
  • Cancer
  • Tooth Loss and Bone Loss
  • Gum Sensitivity

Gum disease requires serious attention. Avoid the risks by treating gum disease.

What Does Gum Disease Treatment Cost?

The costs associated with gum disease treatment vary broadly depending on the progression of the disease. For example, a deep cleaning costs less than gum disease surgery. We develop a customized treatment plan and quote for each patient.

Dental insurance typically covers a portion of the treatment, depending on the specific coverage. Check with your dental insurance provider to ask about your coverage and plan.
