Dental Cleanings in Atlanta

dental-cleanings-in-atlanta-gaThe foundation of oral health is proper cleaning and care for your mouth and teeth. This includes daily brushing and flossing as your Atlanta dentist recommends, using mouth rinses, and getting routine dental cleanings. The average person should receive at least two professional dental cleanings a year, or one every 6 months. Deep dental cleanings are also performed as needed for treatment of conditions like gum disease. It is important to make and keep dental cleaning appointments to maintain good oral health.

Routine Dental Cleaning

Routine dental cleanings at our Atlanta Smiles office are performed at your normal checkups, and are part of preventative care. Certain individuals are considered to be high risk, and may need 3 or more cleanings a year. Pregnant women have a suppressed immune system during pregnancy and are more likely to develop gingivitis. This may require additional cleanings throughout the pregnancy. Diabetics also have a reduced resistance to infection, causing some to suffer from gum disease. Patients who smoke or use tobacco products should also get additional cleanings to monitor and maintain their oral health.

Atlanta Deep Dental Cleaning

Unlike routine cleanings, deep dental cleanings are not considered preventative care. Deep dental cleanings are performed as a treatment plan for periodontal and gum disease. It is also a good option for patients who have not received regular dental care every 6 months. During a routine checkup, the dental hygienist will measure the space between your teeth and gums. These spaces are known as pockets. If the pocket is too big, the hygienist will likely recommend a series of deep dental cleanings.

What To Expect

Routine Dental Cleaning – Brushing and flossing each day is the best way to maintain good oral health at home. With your own dental care routine you can remove food and plaque from your teeth.  However, tartar build up can only be removed at the dentist’s office using dental instruments. Your dental hygienist will use manual or ultrasonic instruments to remove the tartar. Once it is removed, the hygienist will polish the teeth. Polishing the teeth helps to remove surface stains and plaque build up. If there are stains on the teeth, a gritty material is often used to scrub the stains away. After the dental cleaning, a thorough examination of the teeth will be performed by the dentist with assistance from the hygienist.

Deep Dental Cleaning – Once you have had your dental check up, it may be recommended for you to have a deep dental cleaning. Deep dental cleaning is also known as root planing and scaling. Root planing involves a scaling instrument being used to remove tarter and plaque from the surface of the roots. The goal of deep cleaning is to remove the bacteria from the pockets of the teeth to reverse the effects of gum and periodontal disease. Some patients may need more deep cleaning treatments than others to see improvement.

At Home Dental Cleaning

It is important to maintain your oral health at home in between visits to the dentist. Brushing and flossing your teeth, as well as using mouth rinses, are the best way to care for your teeth at home. If you feel you are having trouble keeping your teeth clean, ask your hygienist for a brushing or flossing demonstration. You can hold a mirror to watch the technique used to remove plaque from stubborn places like the molars.

Brushing – should be done twice a day, or after every meal when possible. Replace your toothbrush at least every 3 months.
Flossing – it is recommended to floss at least once a day to remove food and plaque from the teeth.
Mouth Rinses – can be used to freshen breath or improve your oral health. Check the manufacturer’s directions to determine how much and how often to use.
